Hela’s Little Helpers (A Sept of Spirits, Day 19)

I sing now the praises
of the disregarded,
the scorned,
the feared and loathed:
cockroaches,
rats,
vultures,
flies,
worms,
molds,
bacteria–
all the small,
unassuming spirits
of the compost bin
and the trashcan,
the roadside
and the refuse heap,
the cemetery
and the soft soil,
whose constant,
oft-denigrated work
keeps our world
clean and livable.
Hail and praise
to Hela’s little helpers!
